Michael Rogers, a young taxi driver from Deansgate, Manchester, loses his job, when the cab firm goes bust. Due to Gary Beresford having an accident at work, he is unable to go visit his aunt Ada, who is living in an old people's home in Cumbria, so he asks his son and daughter-in-law to see her instead. Whilst there, a friend of Ada's talks of the death of a child and that she is buried behind the fireplace. Neither of the Beresfords believe her to start off with, but when the senior citizen dies mysteriously, they began to suspect that the friend of Thomas's great aunt might have been murdered, but convincing the local police of that proves ...
Thanks to Thomas's parents volunteering to take care of their four-month old grandaughter, Vanessa, Tommy accompanies Tuppence to a reunion of former pupils at Hurstworth, her old boarding school. One of the current students, a sixteen year-old girl named Georgina Clarke keeps talking about a murder that took place there, three years ago, but the headmistress, Lenora Sampson declares that it was suicide. However, when Georgina is pushed to her death from the top floor, the Beresfords find that they have to re-open the forgotten murder enquiry, and in doing so, re-open old wounds.
A strange text message on Tuppence's mobile, featuring the cryptic question "N or M?", leads her and Tommy into the suspicious death of a waitress in a cafe on Brighton's promenade. Digging deeper, they discover a link with a murder case that Manchester CID failed to solve over twenty years ago. During the unofficial enquiry, Tuppence discovers she is pregnant.
Whilst on their honeymoon in Dorset, the Beresfords become involved in the murder of the cousin of Lord Robert Gossington - the owner of Sunningdale House, a country estate. The police suspect Lord Gossington's solicitor, Mark Pickford, but Tommy and Tuppence think that vital evidence is being overlooked, and choose to make their own investigation into the murder and find themselves up against a wall of seemingly unbreakable alibis.
