An old school friend, and former girlfriend, of Adam Dalgleish, from Salford, single mother Jane Bradshaw, invites him to the opening of a centre for un-married and runaway teenage mothers. However, one of the residents - Sally Jupp - is reported in the papers as having a reputation for destroying happy marriages. This revelation does not go down well with her employers, the Maxie family.
